The cable arrived promptly, and once I understood how to set it up, programming it went smoothly. However, it took me about two hours to figure everything out, so I’m sharing my experience to help you avoid the same learning curve. First, the cable did not work with Windows 7 in my case, and while I can’t confirm compatibility with versions between 7 and 10, I suspect it’s unlikely. Windows 10, on the other hand, worked perfectly; the cable was recognized immediately, and my first successful programming was done using CHIRP. I imported a UV5R file into CHIRP, and it loaded onto the radio without issues, although I later discovered that some UV9R features, such as displaying names instead of frequencies, require specific software that CHIRP doesn’t yet support. After reading reviews and the manual, I downloaded the BAOFENG GT3WP software from their website and installed it on my Windows 10 computer. This software worked seamlessly with the cable, instantly recognizing the assigned COM port and allowing me to turn on display names and disable voice notifications. It also modified the imported UV5R file as needed. Overall, the cable is well-built, and I appreciated the included screw for securely locking the connector to the radio. Now that I’ve learned how to use it properly, I feel confident making updates or changes to my radio as needed. It’s a reliable product, and I’m quite satisfied with its performance.

The Baofeng UV9R Plus is a solid, well-built, and affordable “kick-around” radio that has exceeded my expectations. Initially, I was hesitant to purchase it, but after hearing several friends praise Baofeng radios for their affordability and ability to perform well, I decided to give it a try. While I can’t personally vouch for its waterproof capabilities, I can confirm that it feels sturdy and reliable in hand. I opted not to purchase the programming cable, choosing instead to program it manually. Despite warnings from friends that these radios can be tricky to program, I found the process straightforward and comparable to programming my Yaesu HT. The key is to have your receive frequency, offset, offset direction, and tone settings ready and to write down the menu sequence—it’s surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. Performance-wise, I’ve been impressed. With the stock antenna, I’ve been able to hit repeaters over 40 miles away without any issues, particularly on the 70cm band, which seems to outperform 2M for connections. An antenna upgrade would likely enhance the 2M band performance, but even as-is, it works remarkably well. I also own a Yaesu FT60R, which is an excellent radio, but I find myself reaching for the UV9R Plus just as often — if not more. It’s reliable, performs well, and is an excellent backup or even primary option. I’m almost embarrassed to admit how much I enjoy using it!

Before purchasing this cord, I spent a considerable amount of time researching and reading countless reviews. I was especially concerned because I use Windows 11, and I kept coming across horror stories about other cords failing to work despite claiming compatibility with the operating system. In the end, I decided to take a chance on this cord, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. As soon as I plugged it into my computer and connected it to my radio, it worked flawlessly—just as advertised. This truly is a plug-and-play product, and it saved me the frustration I had feared based on my research. I highly recommend this programming cord to anyone who wants a reliable, hassle-free solution. After such an outstanding experience, I’m excited to explore more products from MIRKIT in the future!

The radio performs well overall, but there are a few minor issues that can be frustrating. For example, when the keyboard is locked in scan mode, the scanning function stops and cannot be restarted without unlocking the keyboard. The programming cable included with the radio requires a rubber band to hold it securely in place, though this issue seems to be improving and might be due to the plug itself. On a positive note, the plug for the mic and earpiece works perfectly. When programming the radio with CHIRP, it’s important to use the BF-F8HP setting if you want to include the medium power option, as the UV-5R setting doesn’t support it. The manual that comes with the radio is small and difficult to read, so I downloaded the BF-F8HP manual from the Baofengtech website. It’s essentially the same radio, and the larger manual is much easier to navigate. While testing, a friend and I successfully hit a repeater over 30 miles away using both 5 and 8 watts while standing on his elevated deck. I’ve added a Nagoya NA-771 antenna, which I expect will improve reception even further. One thing to note is that the radio is unstable when standing upright, particularly with a longer antenna—a small bump could easily knock it over. Despite these quirks, I’m pleased with the radio and look forward to fully testing it once I renew my license. I’m also excited to power up my FT-101ZD HF and dive back into HF communications.

This is hands down the best gift I’ve given my child in the past two years! These walkie-talkies are a game-changer, especially with the added feature of games included. What’s even better is that they connect seamlessly to other walkie-talkies we already had, as long as they’re set to the same channel. Now, we have six walkie-talkies in total, and the games, while probably inexpensive to design, add a level of creativity and fun that I never would have thought to combine with walkie-talkies. My 8-year-old and all the neighborhood kids are outside every day, running around and playing games like kids should be during the summer, instead of being glued to their screens. It’s been so refreshing to see them engaging with each other and staying active. Five stars all the way, and a huge shout-out to the person who came up with this brilliant idea! It’s been a win for both the kids and the parents.
